What is a Granny Charger?
A granny charger is a portable electric vehicle (EV) charger that plugs into a standard 10-amp socket, often regarded as the slowest option for charging an EV. The term “granny charger” comes from the idea that this type of charging is simple and slow. While it may take nearly a full day to charge an EV, the granny charger is a convenient option because it doesn’t require any installation or special equipment – just a wall socket. These chargers are often included with the purchase of an EV, making them accessible for those without a dedicated home charging station. Although not ideal for daily use if your frequently drive long distances, a granny charger can be useful for overnight charging or when no faster option is available.

While granny chargers are a convenient option it is important to note that they are not recommended as a sole source of charging an EV.
The process of charging your EV is easy with a granny charger. Ensure the 3-pin charging end is inserted into your standard household 10amp outlet and the charger is plugged into the EV charging port. From here initiation of charging will begin, providing an output power of 2.3 kilowatts (kW). It will take an average time of 21 hours for most standard EVs to charge from 0% to 100% with a granny charger.
