Is GAC About to Release the Best Affordable EV to Hit the Australian Market?
Affordable EV Options are Here
Newest Australian-bound automotive giant, GAC motor announced its arrival late last month at an industry mobility event in Melbourne. Announcing the confirmation of the Aion V EV to enter Australia by mid-2025, GAC is coming in hot with EVs priced below $30,000, the cheapest to hit Australia so far.
Showcasing their first upcoming Australian release, the Aion V, the automotive giant made a lasting impression. Rivaling the likes of the Byd Atto 3 and the Volkswagen ID.4, the Aion V is a fully electric SUV, with plenty of space for both the driver and passengers. Priced at less than $28,000, the Aion V outprices its rivals by over $15,000. The Aion V is not the only model to be released in Australia by mid-2025, rumours are that the Aion UT will shortly follow.
Priced even cheaper than its sibling EV, the Aion UT is set to be the cheapest EV released in Australia. This hatchback competes against the MG4, GWM Ora and the BYD Dolphin and is over $10,000 cheaper than competitors.
Priced at $21,400 this hatchback delivers more than 500km of range. Featuring a 100kW motor, it can hit speeds of up to 150km/h. The UT features a minamilist design with 2 screens, a 14.6inch central control screen and an 8.8inch behind the wheel display.
These new releases may be the first chance that Australians have to make the switch from owning a petrol vehicle to an EV without straying from their budget.
Long term Cost Savings
The low price of the new Aion V and UT is not the only cost savings you will receive when switching from petrol to electric car. EVs are generally cheaper to run in the long term, as electricity is cheaper than petrol. Features such as the use of solar charging with the IQ Home Solar further decreases the expenditure on charging. On top of this, EVs require fewer moving parts and therefore require less maintenance than petrol vehicles, savings you money on servicing in the long run.
Overcoming Range Anxiety
Range anxiety is no longer an issue with the newest EV releases. Both the Aion V and UT can cover over 500km of range before a recharge is needed, which is similar in range to a standard petrol vehicle. Road trips can now be taken with the reassurance that you will make it to the next charging station. With new charging infrastructure installation everywhere, you are almost guaranteed a DC fast charger in every city or town you pass by, ensuring that you can recharge in the time you stop for lunch.
Practicality Matters
Practicality is a key decision-making factor for most families or individuals when purchasing a new car. Safety and space are a massive considerations for families. The Aion V focuses on both, with 360-degree cameras for your safety and others around you, and ample space for passengers and luggage. While the Aion UT is a smaller hatchback it still has significant space and top of the range modern safety features.
With the newest announcement of the Aion V and UT, accessibility to EVs in Australia is set to rise. Priced at over $10,000 cheaper than its rivals, GAC is set to make an impact on the Australian EV market and increase realistic ownership of EVs for many Australian residents. As mid 2025 approaches we will soon see if these truly are the best affordable EVs to hit the Australian market.
