Types of EV Chargers

There are three main types of EV chargers used in Australia. Level 1 chargers use a standard power point and are the slowest. Level 2 chargers are EV chargers on a dedicate circuit that deliver 7kW to 22 kW of AC power and are the preferred option for home charging. DC fast chargers deliver 25 to 420kW and are used for commercial and public fast charging.

  • Level 1 uses a standard 10amp Australian power point.
  • Level 2 is AC 7kW or 22kW and is the preferred home charging method for overnight charging.
  • DC fast chargers are commercial units which deliver DC power from 25kW to 420kW
  • All EVs support Level 2 charging.

Level 1 Chargers

Level 1 chargers plug into a standard Australian outlet and provide slow charging. They are suitable for emergency use or low mileage drivers. Most portable chargers are rated to 8amps for safe use at home.

Level 2 Chargers

Level 2 chargers provide faster charging using single or three phase AC power. They are the most common choice for Australian households.

Typical output:

  • 7kW for single phase.
  • 11kW to 22kW for three phase.

Recommended models:

  • Ocular LTE Plus: Simple monitoring functions through a Bluetooth app.
  • Ocular IQ Home Solar: Supports more advanced scheduled charging with OCPP app.
  • Ocular IQ Home Solar 22 kW: Ideal for three phase setups with monitoring options.

DC Fast Chargers

DC fast chargers convert AC power to DC power externally and feed it directly to the vehicle battery. They deliver very fast charging but require commercial grade electrical supply.
Typical output: 25 to 420 kW.

Recommended models:

  • Ocular Titan 60kW
