The green building grant supports environmental upgrades to existing commercial buildings and apartment buildings that are more than 10 years old, within the City of Sydney local area. The funding is aimed at projects that reduce emissions, waste and water use, and it forms part of the council’s wider environmental grants program, which also covers climate resilience and circular economy projects opening in the same round.

In other words, feasibility studies, electrical capacity assessments and staged EV charging rollouts for apartment buildings are exactly the type of project this grant is designed to support.
Cash funding of up to $50,000 is available per project (for projects running up to one year), with multi-year funding of up to three years also on offer. Within that, up to $10,000 can go towards capital expenditure items the applicant owns and will use beyond the life of the project, such as charging hardware or infrastructure upgrades. Projects requesting more than $25,000 need to include additional detail on financial sustainability and risk management as part of the application
Applications must come from an eligible legal entity rather than an individual resident. Eligible applicant types include owners corporations, incorporated associations, co-operatives, corporations, not-for-profit organisations and trustees of a trust, each with an active ABN. Importantly for apartment buildings, the council’s guidelines confirm that corporations, including strata and building management companies and qualified service providers, can apply on behalf of building owners and owners corporations. This makes it worth raising with your strata manager or building manager directly rather than assuming it’s an owner’s corporation-only process.
