BYD’s recently launched Shark 6 ute in Australia and it has been critised for it’s lower towing capacity compared to the almighty Toyota Hilux which dominates the Australian market. The initial plug-in hybrid (PHEV) utility vehicle in Australia will launch with a braked towing capacity of 2500kg but in 2026 will have an upgrade to 3500 kg

Although BYD believes the Shark 6 has sufficient appeal to attract customers with over 5000 orders and massive appeal for it’s range of plug in hybrids. Along with modifying the existing vehicle, BYD is also aiming to broaden its ute range both internationally and within Australia.

Australia’s love to tow boats, caravans and everything in between. It’s hoped this increase in towing capacity will put a lower strain on the vehicle and allow it to improve it’s utility to match that of it’s traditional rivals.

Electric motors can handle heavy loads. They produce their torque almost instantaneously and from when the motor first starts spinning, whereas an internal combustion engine needs to build up speed before it’s producing its maximum.
