In Australia, where the EV market is gaining traction, understanding the TCO involves delving into various factors, including initial costs, maintenance, and the unique “fueling” costs associated with EVs. We will explore the TCO of an EV, such as the 2023 BYD Atto, and compare it to a conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle, using the 2023 Hyundai Kona as a benchmark.

EV Initial Costs: The BYD Atto, priced at $43,646, comes equipped with a battery range of 345km and a fuel consumption rate of 14kWh/100km. Additional costs that come with having an EV often includes a Type 2 to Type 2 EV charging cable ($355), Ocular LTE with a 6M Type 2 Cable 7kW ($2,050), and installation ($1,070). 

 

ICE Initial Costs: The Hyundai Kona, priced at $42,273, has a fuel consumption rate of 8L/100km. No charging infrastructure costs are associated with ICE vehicles.  

 

Runing Costs:

BYD Atto: Monthly running costs include $137.31, with maintenance costing around $1590, ‘fuel’ over a 5 year period costing $3727. Furthermore, it costs around $7.6 for 241km of range for an EV like the BYD Atto.  

Hyundai Kona: The monthly costs of an ICE vehicle such as the Hyundai Kona is a whopping $245.67, with maintenance costing $2760, and the ‘fuel’ is triple that of an EV, costing $9,930. Further, it costs almost 5 times as more for 241km of range for an ICE vehicle, costing $34.70 based on petrol costs of $1.8/L.  

 

Total Cost of Ownership Comparison: The numbers speak for themselves – the BYD Atto, and by extension, EVs in general, offer a compelling case for cost savings over a 5-year period. The total cost of ownership for the BYD Atto stands at $39,620, while the Hyundai Kona comes in at $45,134 over the same period.
