The Quell 4 Litre Lithium-ion Fire Extinguisher is a water-type portable fire extinguisher containing an encapsulation agent. It is recommended for use by trained professionals in environments where lithium-ion battery fire risks may be present.

Standards and Lithium-Ion Battery Testing

This extinguisher complies with AS/NZS 1841.2:2007 as a water-type portable fire extinguisher and has a 2A fire rating.

AS/NZS 1841.2 does not specifically test or certify the performance of fire extinguishers against lithium-ion battery fires. There is currently no Australian Standard specifically for lithium-ion battery fires, and the scope of the product’s Global-Mark certification does not include lithium-ion batteries.

According to the supplier, the Quell 4 Litre extinguisher has been tested on a 2.4 kWh lithium-ion battery fire and successfully extinguished the test fire without re-ignition. This supplier testing is separate from certification under AS/NZS 1841.2 and should not be interpreted as testing under an Australian Standard specifically for lithium-ion battery fires.

Important Safety Information

This product is recommended for use by trained professionals only.

Members of the general public should not attempt to extinguish a lithium-ion battery fire. In the event of a fire, evacuate the area and call Triple Zero (000).

The appropriate fire protection measures will depend on the equipment, battery capacity, installation environment and identified site risks. Consult a qualified fire protection professional to confirm that appropriate protection is provided for all applicable fire risks.

Lithium-Ion Battery Risks

Lithium-ion batteries are used in a wide range of equipment, including mobile phones, tablets, laptops, power tools, electric and hybrid vehicles, caravans, marine vessels, emergency lighting, battery charging equipment, mining vehicles and energy storage systems.

Damaged, defective, overheated, overcharged or short-circuited lithium-ion batteries may enter thermal runaway and create serious fire, heat, smoke and toxic-gas risks.

Any attempt to respond to a lithium-ion battery fire should form part of an appropriate site-specific fire safety and emergency response plan.

Potential Professional-Use Environments

Subject to assessment by a qualified fire protection professional, potential environments may include:

  • Data centres
  • EV charging facilities
  • Battery workshops and service centres
  • Electric vehicle dealerships
  • Commercial battery charging areas
  • Renewable-energy facilities
  • Workplaces using lithium-ion battery equipment
  • Facilities storing or handling lithium-ion batteries

The inclusion of an environment in this list does not mean that one extinguisher is suitable for every battery size, fire scenario or installation.
