2021 MX-30 – Mazda’s First All-Electric Vehicle

Mazda Australia will bring its first all-electric vehicle to the Australian market in mid 2021. The 2021 MX-30 comes with two variants, a mild-hybrid version that saves fuel usage and a pure electric version that produces no emission at all. The mild-hybrid variant is powered by the combination of a regular 2.0 liter four-cylinder petrol engine and a 24-volt electric system to reduce fuel consumption. However, the pure EV variant is more anticipated by the public, with the major competitors being the MG ZS EV and Hyundai Kona Electric.Mazda Australia has confirmed the specs as follows:

  • 5kWh battery pack that can offer 200km of driving range according to the WLTP
  • Front-axle-mounted electric motor that can produce 107kW/271Nm
  • 0-100km/h in 9.7 seconds
  • 6kW on-board charging capacity and up to 37kW DC charging capability. See Mazda Charging Stations
  • Type 2 and CCS2 adaptivity

Compared with the main competitors, the driving range of the MX-30 seems to be a major weak point. Mazda claims that this relatively small size of battery was carefully chosen considering the needs for the target customers. The brand is aiming the MX-30 at young Australian couples without children who lives in an inner-urban lifestyle. Meanwhile, we can expect Mazda Australia to bring in a new variant with much longer driving range in the near future.

In terms of the safety features, the 2021 MX-30 has not yet received a crash-test rating from ANCAP. With the equipped emergency lane keeping, autonomous emergency braking, land departure warning and bling-spot monitoring, the MX-30 has obtained a 5-star rating from Euro NCAP.

Charging is one of the major issues when you own a pure EV. For home charging, you will be using a dedicated Mazda charger that can charge your Mazda MX-30 at the full 6.6kW AC rate. You will get a fully charged car in about 5.5 hours. Alternatively, if you have a solar system installed at your home, you can choose to use a Solar charger such as the EO Mini Pro. This smart charger can allow you to charge your car using solar exclusively, and you can also schedule your charging sessions. A portable charger allows you to use the standard wall plug to charge your car. However, the charging speed is slow that you can only charge at 10km/h. Therefore, it is only recommended under emergency situation.

For public charging infrastructure, you will need a Mazda public charging cable. This allows you to charge at the universal charging station that requires you to BYO. To maximize the chance to get charged in the public, you may need to have a Mazda adapter which allows you to charge at the Type 1 charging stations. For the fast DC charging stations, the Mazda MX-30 will be charged from 10% to 80% in under 40 minutes. The charging time will not be varied if the power output at the charging point is more than 37kW.
