Electric Vehicle Sales Accelerate in Australia, Marking Record Growth in 2025

Australia’s electric vehicle (EV) market is demonstrating robust growth in 2025, with new data indicating significant increases in both sales volume and market share compared to the previous year.
According to the Electric Vehicle Council (EVC), more than 14,000 additional battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) have been sold in Australia so far in 2025 relative to the same period in 2024. Between January and June 2025, EVs accounted for over 12 per cent of all new vehicle sales nationwide, representing a notable rise from 9.6 per cent during the first half of 2024.
In June 2025 alone, electric vehicles comprised nearly 16 per cent of new vehicle sales, setting a new monthly record for EV market share in Australia.
“Electric vehicle sales are powering ahead in 2025, with more Australians than ever before getting behind the wheel,” said Julie Delvecchio, Chief Executive Officer of the Electric Vehicle Council.
“An additional 14,000 EVs were sold in the first half of this year compared to the same period the year before. Monthly EV sales set a new Australian record in June as well, with market share breaking through 15 per cent for the first time ever.”
Factors Contributing to Growth
Several key developments are underpinning this increase in EV adoption:
-
Government Policy Support: Federal initiatives, including the implementation of the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard, are expanding the range of EVs available in Australia and contributing to more competitive pricing.
-
Economic and Environmental Benefits: Consumers are increasingly recognising the financial and environmental advantages of EV ownership, including lower running costs and reduced maintenance requirements.
-
Diversification of Vehicle Types: The EV market now offers a broader array of vehicle categories, from utes and SUVs to hatchbacks and vans. Currently, over 350,000 Australians are driving EVs across a wide range of applications, including personal, commercial, and fleet use.
“Once people make the switch to electric driving, they tend to stick to it,” Ms. Delvecchio noted.
Sustaining Momentum
While recent figures indicate positive momentum, industry stakeholders emphasise that further progress depends on ongoing investment and policy action. Ms. Delvecchio underscored the importance of:
-
Expanding public charging infrastructure to enhance accessibility and convenience for all drivers
-
Maintaining and extending financial incentives to encourage continued uptake
-
Supporting technological advancements such as vehicle-to-grid integration
“More EVs on our roads benefit all Australians, delivering quieter streets, cleaner air, and greater protection for our environment,” Ms. Delvecchio stated.
A Pivotal Period for Australia’s Transport Future
The data for 2025 thus far suggests that Australia is at a pivotal juncture in its transition to electric mobility. Continued collaboration between industry, government, and consumers will be essential to sustain this growth trajectory and realise the environmental and economic benefits of widespread EV adoption.
