A beginner’s guide to home EV chargers.
What do you need to know about choosing an EV charger? What charger is right for you?
- What charging speed do I need and how fast can I charge?
– For home chargers, an EV is usually left to charge overnight- about 8 hours- meaning speed shouldn’t be a huge factor. The longer a car is parked the less power is needed.
– A 7kW Charger can deliver 40 km range per hour of charge and a 22kW Charger can deliver a maximum of 120 km range per hour of charge (depending on the car’s capabilities).
- Which plug does my electric car have?
– Most EVs now have an AC – (Alternating Current) Port and a DC (Direct Current) Port.
– 99.9% of home charging is conducted by the AC port due to the high cost of installation and infrastructure of DC chargers.
- Who can install my charging station?
– The installation of a charging station for electric cars must only be carried out by a qualified electrician. Please ensure your electrician is experienced and reads the installation guides comprehensively before starting. Common mistakes are undersized circuit breakers and cables.
- How much will it cost?
– The choice of location for the charger will affect the installation costs. How far is your parking space from the electricity box- is it within 15m or on the other side of the property? Will groundwork be required? Will the EV Charger be wall-mounted or will you require an additional pedestal?
– We recommend an installation that is ‘ fit for the future’ and in a convenient location for everyday use.
